If you’re a pensioner (or help one in your family), you know the annual life certificate drill can be a hassle. The good news is that Aadhaar-based digital authentication now makes it much simpler. Through the government’s Jeevan Pramaan service, eligible pensioners can submit a Digital Life Certificate (DLC) without necessarily going to a bank or pension office. You can even do it with face authentication on a smartphone, which is a real relief for elderly pensioners.

What Is the New Digital Rule for Pensioners?

The big change is that Aadhaar-based face authentication is now more widely used for Digital Life Certificates. You no longer have to depend only on fingerprint or iris scans. A compatible smartphone camera is enough to complete the process.

Why the change? The government wanted to make things easier for elderly and less-mobile pensioners. And people have clearly taken to it: according to the Ministry of Personnel, more than 1.16 crore Digital Life Certificates were generated through face authentication between April 2025 and March 2026.

How Aadhaar Helps in Life Certificate Submission

Jeevan Pramaan uses the Aadhaar platform to verify who you are. Once you’re authenticated, your Digital Life Certificate is generated and stored electronically, so your pension disbursing agency can access it directly.

For face authentication, you’ll generally need:

  • Your Aadhaar number or VID
  • Aadhaar details that are linked with your pension records
  • A compatible Android or iOS smartphone
  • A working internet connection
  • The Jeevan Pramaan app
  • The AadhaarFaceRD application for face authentication

Not sure your Aadhaar details are current? Our guide to the Aadhaar KYC update walks you through keeping them accurate, which helps avoid authentication hiccups later.

One handy detail from the official Jeevan Pramaan portal: Android phones running Android 10 or above and iPhones running iOS 14 or above are supported for the relevant mobile applications.

Who Can Submit the Digital Life Certificate?

Jeevan Pramaan is open to pensioners of the Central Government, State Governments and other government organisations, as long as the pension disbursing authority participates in the system. For the 2026 annual cycle, pensioners aged 80 years and above can submit their Digital Life Certificate from October 1, while everyone else follows the applicable submission schedule. The 2026 cycle is reported to run through November 30, though that could change if the government grants an extension.

How to Submit Jeevan Pramaan Using Face Authentication

The whole thing is designed to be done digitally. Here’s the flow:

  1. Download the official Jeevan Pramaan application.
  2. Install the required Aadhaar face-authentication application.
  3. Enter the pensioner and pension-related details.
  4. Complete the required operator/authentication process.
  5. Capture the pensioner’s face using the smartphone camera.
  6. Complete Aadhaar-based authentication and generate the Digital Life Certificate.

Once it’s generated, the certificate is stored electronically, and your pension disbursing agency can access it.

Pensioners Do Not Always Need to Visit the Bank

The biggest win here is convenience. Many pensioners can now finish the life certificate process from the comfort of home, with no standing in bank queues. The government has also set up help through India Post Payments Bank, post offices and Gramin Dak Sevaks to assist elderly pensioners.

In certain circumstances, doorstep services are available too, for aged, sick, incapacitated and Divyang pensioners. If you’re an EPS pensioner, there’s more good news. EPFO has introduced a doorstep Digital Life Certificate facility through India Post Payments Bank, using Aadhaar-based face or biometric authentication.

Bottom line

A quick word of caution. Whenever things move online, scammers follow. The Central Pension Accounting Office has warned about fraudsters who pretend to help pensioners update their life certificates, then ask for Aadhaar details, PPO numbers, bank information or OTPs. Government agencies do not ask pensioners to share OTPs for this purpose.

So stick to the official Jeevan Pramaan service or authorised assistance, and never share an OTP, PIN, or banking password with an unknown caller. It’s also a good habit to be thoughtful about where you hand over your Aadhaar in everyday life. For example, here’s where your Aadhaar card isn’t needed, such as at hotels.
