Glasgow, July 29 — Six days into the Commonwealth Games, and Team India has a genuine spring in its step. Between the clang of weightlifting plates and the thud of feet on the athletics track, Indian athletes have been quietly (and not-so-quietly) building a medal haul that’s got fans back home checking the standings every few hours.
The scoreboard right now: 12 medals — 2 gold, 7 silver, 3 bronze. And if Day 7 goes to plan, that number’s about to get a lot bigger.
The Story So Far
If there’s one word to describe India’s campaign, it’s consistent. Weightlifting has been the powerhouse it usually is, but athletics has stolen a few headlines of its own this time around.
Mirabai Chanu did what she always does — walked away with gold, this time in the women’s 48kg category, proving once again that when it comes to the big stage, she simply doesn’t blink.
Then there’s Gulveer Singh, whose silver in the men’s 10,000m wasn’t just a medal — it was history. No Indian had ever stood on a Commonwealth Games podium in that event before. He changed that on Day 6.
Not far behind him, Sarvesh Kushare cleared the bar (literally) for a silver in the men’s high jump, adding another bright spot to India’s athletics campaign.
Here’s the full list of medal winners through Day 6:
| Athlete | Sport / Event | Medal |
| Mirabai Chanu | Weightlifting — Women’s 48kg | Gold |
| Sharmila Dhankar | Para Athletics — Women’s Shot Put F57 | Gold |
| Rishikanta Singh | Weightlifting — Men’s 60kg | Silver |
| Raja Muthupandi | Weightlifting — Men’s 65kg | Silver |
| Gyaneshwari Yadav | Weightlifting — Women’s 53kg | Silver |
| Valluri Ajaya Babu | Weightlifting — Men’s 79kg | Silver |
| Sarvesh Kushare | Athletics — Men’s High Jump | Silver |
| Harjinder Kaur | Weightlifting | Silver |
| Gulveer Singh | Athletics — Men’s 10,000m | Silver |
| Bindyarani Devi | Weightlifting — Women’s 58kg | Bronze |
| Jhandu Kumar | Para Powerlifting | Bronze |
| Shilpa Shyla | Para Athletics — Women’s Shot Put F57 | Bronze |
And the good news doesn’t stop at the podium. India’s boxers have punched their way into the semifinals in multiple weight categories — which, thanks to how Commonwealth Games boxing works, means those medals are already in the bag. All that’s left to decide is the colour.
Why Day 7 Could Be the Biggest Day Yet
Wednesday has the makings of a big one. Athletics takes centre stage with several medal events on the line, and all eyes will be on whether India can add to its growing tally on the track and field.
Boxing fans have plenty to watch too — the quarterfinals are underway, and every win from here on out locks in a guaranteed medal.
Beyond that, India’s contingent is spread thin (in the best way) across several disciplines:
- Athletics — medal events
- Boxing — quarterfinals
- Weightlifting — more competitions on the mat
- Swimming
- Para Athletics
- Para Swimming
- Lawn Bowls
With this many irons in the fire, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see India’s medal count jump significantly by the end of the day.
The Bigger Picture
What’s been most encouraging about this campaign isn’t just the medals — it’s who’s winning them. Established stars like Mirabai Chanu are still delivering when it matters most, but they’re being joined by a new generation of athletes stepping up on the biggest stage of their careers.
If that blend of experience and fresh talent keeps clicking the way it has, India’s push up the medal table is far from over. Glasgow could still have a few more memorable moments in store for Indian fans before the Games wrap up.
