Pahalgam Terror Attack: UN Chief Condemns Civilian Killings, Urges India-Pakistan Restraint
Almost 12 days after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, that left 26 people dead, UN Secretary-General António Guterres has strongly condemned the violence. Guterres stated that targeting civilians is unacceptable and called for those responsible to be brought to justice through credible and lawful means.
Speaking on the rising tensions between India and Pakistan, Guterres urged both nations to exercise maximum restraint and step back from the brink of escalation. His comments come at a time when cross-border relations have further strained following the April 22 attack, which claimed the lives of 25 tourists and one local resident.
In response to the attack, the Union Home Ministry has ordered several states to conduct mock drills on May 7 to prepare civilians for potential ‘hostile attacks.’ According to sources cited by PTI, these drills will include activating air raid warning sirens, training civilians and students in civil defence protocols, practicing crash blackout procedures, and camouflaging critical infrastructure. Updated evacuation plans will also be rehearsed to ensure swift and coordinated responses during emergencies.
Amid these security concerns, cyber experts and agencies are on high alert after a handle on X (formerly Twitter) claimed to have launched a cyber attack on sensitive Indian institutions, including the Military Engineering Service and the Manohar Parrikar Institute of Defence Studies and Analysis. Authorities are closely monitoring cyberspace to detect and prevent any further breaches.
