If you are planning to travel this summer by train, then read this news. The lower berth is often unavailable at the request of senior citizens. So, to get a confirmed lower berth, Indian Railways has given the information. Read on!

How to get a lower berth?

A passenger using Indian Railways tweeted this question to the railways asking why this is the case and that it needs to be changed. I had reserved tickets for three senior citizens with lower berth preferences, and even though there were 102 berths available, they were given middle berths, upper berths, and side lower berths, the passenger wrote, tagging Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav. You need to fix it.

What was the reply of IRCTC?

On Twitter, RCTC gave a response to this query. To which IRCTC replied, The lower berth/senior citizen quota berth is only for passengers who are 60 years of age or older; lower berths are reserved for female passengers who are 45 years of age or older who are travelling alone or with two passengers (on the same ticket). IRCTC said that if there are more than two senior people present or one senior citizen is present, but the other is not, the system won't consider the request.

Senior citizens' concessions suspended.

The concessionary tickets of numerous groups of passengers, including senior citizens, were suspended in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic to cut down on unnecessary travel. Additionally, according to Railways, concessions for senior residents have been discontinued because they are in the greatest danger of COVID-19 virus propagation and fatality.
