Is vitamin D helpful in avoiding coronavirus infection? The question of vitamin D is very prominently raised among the researchers. The Scientific Advisory Commission on Nutrition and the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence, an organization working on health and nutrition in the British government, has prepared a report on the role of vitamin D in the corona.

What is the advice about vitamin D?

Most people are locked in homes during the corona pandemic. Vitamin D is low in the body. On normal days, people spend more time outside the houses. The skin is sunny, and this natural source of vitamins proves to be beneficial for us. Britain's National Health Service says people should take 10 micrograms of vitamins every day during this epidemic. Especially those who have spent most of the time in homes. In the UK, it is advisable to take vitamin D separately from October to March is winter, even before the pandemic. However, Public Health England (PHE) has advised taking vitamin D supplements throughout the year. PHE says it is important to take vitamin D separately for those unable to go out or are living in a care home.

Those who need to take vitamin D separately throughout the year-

  • Who often don't go out of the house.
  • People who live in care homes.
  • People whose skin is always covered with clothes.

Even those whose skin is brown or black do not get enough vitamin D because they cannot get out of lockdown. They should also take vitamin D separately throughout the year. In addition to Scotland and Wales's governments, Northern Ireland's public health agency has given similar advice in lockdown.

Why do we need vitamin D?

It is a widespread but important fact that vitamin D is essential for strong and healthy bones, teeth, and muscles. Lack of it weakens the bones and leads to drought in children. Its deficiency in adults causes a disease called osteomalacia. The researchers have also stated that vitamin D keeps the disease-resistant capacity effective in the body and helps fight infections. Some studies also say that adequate availability of vitamin D in the body can prevent common colds and flu. However, the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) has reviewed vitamin D treatment to prevent chest infections and said that there is not enough evidence to say that vitamin D should be taken for this.

Can vitamin D prevent corona?

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, in a review of research on vitamin D, said that there is no evidence to say that vitamin D supplements can prevent COVID-19. Experts have no doubt that vitamin D has many benefits at the moment of the pandemic and that its presence in the body needs to be adequately maintained. According to a report by BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, and Health, "Vitamin D should be given for special items and not as a treatment for Covid-19. The lack of vitamin D in the present time is indeed a reasonable argument. Vitamin D is sufficient in our body to be part of our healthy lifestyle."

Some researchers say that a person is deficient in vitamin D and is infected with coronavirus, so it is difficult to heal. But heart disease is also common among corona victims, so it is not easy to reach any conclusions.

Should we take more vitamin D doses?

No. Although vitamin D supplements are very safe, they can be dangerous for a long time if you take more than the doctor's stated dose. Be sure to take care of these things while taking vitamin D supplements:

  • Children from one to 10 years should not give more than 50 micrograms a day.
  • Infants (below 12 months) should not give more than 25 micrograms a day.
  • Adults should not take more than 100 micrograms a day.
  • Doctors give more than this in acute vitamin D deficiency or extreme conditions.
  • Vitamin D supplements are not safe for those who have kidney problems.

Where can vitamin D supplements be purchased?

Vitamin D supplements are not a rare thing. It is easily found at the medical store. These are either in the form of vitamin D tablets or as tablets of multivitamins. Experts say buy and eat as much as you need. Most vitamin D supplements have D3. Vitamin D2 is made in plants, and D3 is made from your skin. Its drop is available to children.

Diet and Vitamin D:

A balanced diet keeps your immunity normal. In such a situation, no one needs to take anything separately. But it is difficult to find enough vitamin D in the diet only. A balanced diet is vital for good health, but we should also be aware of the diet. Vitamin D occurs in fish and eggs. Also contains cereals, artificial butter, and yogurt.

Should we take Sunlight?

This is also not possible if you want to supply vitamin D only from sunlight. There is also a need to be careful with sunlight. Cover your skin or apply sunscreen to avoid sunburn skin. This can prevent damage to the skin from sunlight.
